THE saga of retired Essendon AFL champion James Hird's stolen jumper continues, with a 22-year-old man charged over the theft of the prized guernsey.

The 250th game jumper signed by Hird and gifted to club stalwart Colin Hooper was swiped from a framing shop in Kew, in Melbourne's inner east, on September 1.

It was later discovered by detectives investigating another matter at a home in Springvale South, in the city's outer east.

The jumper had not been washed and was stained with grass and dirt marks from Hird's milestone game.

A man fleeing the house during the raid dropped the jumper in the backyard as police pursued him on foot.

Dandenong detectives arrested a 22-year-old man in a car in the outer eastern suburb of Cranbourne about midnight.

He has been charged with handling stolen goods in relation to the theft of Hird's 250th game jumper.

The 22-year-old faces another 12 charges relating to theft and burglary dating back to May 2005.

He is expected to appear in the Dandenong Magistrate's Court later this morning.

James Clement Retires from Collingwood

Collingwood defender James Clement has shocked his club by announcing his retirement from AFL football.

The Magpies vice-captain played 230 games, including 146 for Collingwood after joining the club from Fremantle in 2001.

His announcement comes just two days after the Magpies were knocked out of the 2007 AFL finals series in a five-point defeat to Geelong in their preliminary final.

Verdict :

This is a bit of a shock, Jimmy Clement shouldn't have pulled the pin like this, he at least should have announced his retirement during the season, it's a shame really - as a Collingwood supporter I would have liked the chance to farewell Clement and show some appreciation - after all Jimmy has been a champion for the pies for several years, it leaves me wondering how many other Pies will call it a day and not get the farewell they truly deserve.

Geelong midfielder Jimmy Bartel is confident his runaway Brownlow Medal victory won't prove to be much of a distraction in the lead-up to Saturday's grand final against Port Adelaide.

The 23-year-old polled 29 votes, including eight best-on-ground performances, to finish seven votes clear of Brisbane's Simon Black, the Kangaroos' Brent Harvey and West Coast tyro Daniel Kerr, who was ineligible due to a suspension.

Bartel's teammate and pre-event favourite Gary Ablett polled 20 votes to finish in a tie for sixth.

"I couldn't stop shaking up there and I'm still overwhelmed," Bartel said.

"It's starting to sink in but I don't think it will for quite some time.

"I've got training and we've got a pretty big game to look forward to.

"I just can't wait for the grand final now."

Bartel was confident that winning the medal would not distract him from focusing on Saturday's grand final against the Power, where the Cats will be seeking to end a 44-year premiership drought.

"I've got some pretty good teammates here who keep me down to earth," he said.

"They're looking forward to the weekend, just like I am and I just can't wait for Saturday to come around.

"Hopefully (I'll play) well.

"But then again, I'd rather not get a kick at all if (it means) we win the premiership."

(Essendon) Bombers Loose again - AFL 2006 -

Sheeds your time is up, suffering there biggest defeat in a long time at the hands of Adelaide, Adelaide 30. 8. (188) def. Essendon 6. 14. (50), middle of last year the Bombers were claiming to have a better group of young players than it's nemesis Collingwood, a year on and I wonder if they still think the same.

Sheeds has even bagged the better teams this year such as Richmond, saying that the Bombers will/would never play the same style of game that got The Tigers over the line Against Adelaide and referred to the style of play as netball and that "That style of play will get them no where" well Sheeds have a good look at them and see where they are now and that's a better position than most would have expected 2 months ago.

Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy says he is not even thinking about how much longer his distinguished coaching career will last as he focuses on getting the Bombers off the bottom of the ladder.

With Essendon a game adrift at the bottom of the ladder with just one win after nine rounds and staring at the possibility of its first wooden spoon since 1933, speculation has already began as to whether the Bombers will offer 58-year-old Sheedy a new contract when his present deal expires at the end of 2007.

By then Sheedy will have been in charge at Windy Hill for 27 years, but would still need to coach for another three years to have any chance of beating Collingwood's Jock McHale's league record of 714 games as a coach after Sheedy last week became only the second man to coach 600 AFL matches.

When asked on Wednesday whether he envisaged himself coaching Essendon beyond 2007, a jovial Sheedy laughed it off, ahead of Friday night's daunting trip to Adelaide, saying "that's a loaded question"."In the end what happens, happens," he said."We will cross that bridge when we get to it."

Sheedy said his sole focus at the moment was improving the Bombers' list."We have got to get our players up to 50 games and over as quick as we can because when you have got 13 or 14 of those (with less than 50 games experience) in the side it does put a lot of pressure on the senior players.""And we have got to pick (more) kids that will come into the game who will (eventually) play 100 games and that's a difficult task."

While the Bombers are currently on their worst losing run - eight successive losses - since 1978, Sheedy said the players were far from dispirited."The players have been sensational - the best group of players I have been involved with in 40 years (as a player and coach) in that we haven't been winning, we are on the bottom of the ladder but they haven't lost their spirit,' he said.

Sheedy said the Bombers would continue to field an inexperienced side in coming weeks saying former skipper James Hird would not be rushed back from a hamstring injury."Why rush him back, he may not play until after the mid-season break," Sheedy said."

We won't play him until he is completely right and it gives us a chance to play another young guy in the meantime."

Essendon (Bombers) Put up a fight against West Coast (Eagles) - AFL 2006

A spirited Essendon has been defeated by West Coast on Sunday at Telstra Dome on Sunday by 21 points. The Eagles 16.17 (113) were too good for the Bombers 14.8 (92) to record their first win over Essendon at Telstra Dome in six outings. It was also just the sixth win by West Coast from 20 matches at Docklands.

Reigning Essendon club best-and-fairest winner Jason Johnson is set to be dropped for next Saturday night's clash against Port Adelaide at Telstra Dome, according to Bombers coach Kevin Sheedy.

Johnson entered the season having undergone surgery last December to repair a ruptured tendon in his left foot.

His pre-season was severely hindered, yet he has played every home-and-away match so far in 2006.

But speaking in his post-match media conference after Essendon's 21-point loss to West Coast at Telstra Dome on Sunday, Sheedy conceded it has been difficult for Johnson in recent times. He said his form meant a return to the VFL, representing the Bendigo Bombers next weekend against Port Melbourne was likely.

The Essendon fc were gallant in defeat, round 5 afl

A five-day break since the Anzac Day clash has taken its toll on a gallant Essendon with the Bombers going down to Hawthorn by one-point at a rain-soaked MCG on Sunday.

Once again the Bombers, who have now lost four games in a row since beating reigning premiers Sydney in the opening game, played well without winning just as they did in the past two matches against the Bulldogs and Collingwood.

This was a courageous effort from Essendon considering the Bombers had only had a five-day break coming into the game - following Tuesday's Anzac Day clash against Collingwood - while the Hawks had enjoyed a nine-day break.

The Bombers had jumped the Hawks to lead by 16 points at quarter-time but that margin had been cut to just a goal at half-time.

In the second half the Bombers' veteran centre-half-forward Scott Lucas threatened to win the game for Essendon as Jobe Watson and Jason Johnson - in his best showing for the year - continued to surge the Bombers forward.

Hawthorn led by nine points at the last change, Essendon could have been excused for being overrun in the final term particularly in a match which had been played in wet conditions following heavy pre-match rain at the MCG.

But as the rain pelted down in the final term it took a moment of sheer brilliance from the Hawks' pocket dynamo in attack Mark Williams to win the game for the home side.

Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy admitted his disappointment at again seeing the Bombers get so close to a much-needed win.

"It's a very frustrating period for our club, no doubt about that," Sheedy said.

"But that is the competition at the moment - the teams that are getting up are getting up by a kick or two."But we had our opportunities to win the game today and we should have."

HAWTHORN: 1.4, 6.5, 11.7, 12.12 (84)
ESSENDON: 4.2, 7.5, 9.10, 12.11 (83)

Essendon Goals:

The Essendon Bombers - Bombers - AFL

The Bombers.

The Bombers currently have just the one win and have a handfull of injuries to add to the pain, with Lloyd out and a few of the young boys down, the Turtle Rioli coming back soon, the Bombers look to be in a bit of trouble, but will they have the depth to carry on? Hirdy was surprised to have the captaincy but why was he surprised?

They tackle there enemy in Collingwood on Tuesday for Anzac day with the New MCG up and running with a sellout crowd of 92 000 anything can happen, but Collingwood have some form so should win, however in recent times the Bombers have held the edge.

The Bombers will miss Lloyd but watch Hird as he always stars on Anzac day.

Go Bombers.
